Posting Title:   Temporary Contract - Principal Research Scientist

Location:  Boston, MA

Department:  Formulation Development

 

This is a PT role: 20-30 hours per week.

 

 

Position Overview:

Vertex Pharmaceuticals is seeking a talented scientist who can join our Formulation Development group in Boston, MA. Consistently and passionately challenging the boundaries of their knowledge, our Formulation Development team employs traditional and innovative techniques and Quality-by-Design principles to ensure the safety, efficacy, and quality of Vertex pharmaceutical products.

 

As a member of the Formulation Development team, this scientist will support the drug development programs at Vertex through phase appropriate dissolution method development, validation, and transfer. The ideal candidate will have proven ability to learn quickly, communicate effectively and deliver results in a fast-paced environment.  This person will have the opportunity to provide leadership and coaching to junior scientists in a laboratory setting.  Applicants should understand drug product processing, drug substance physical form, formulation design principles, dissolution testing, and HPLC method development.  Vast knowledge of guidelines and associated recommendations is a must (ICH, USP, etc).  Strong analytical technical capabilities, formulation development knowledge and excellent communication skills are required to be successful in this role.

 

Key Responsibilities:

 

  • Demonstrating leadership and coaching to junior scientists in the laboratory
  • Serving to help keep laboratory and samples organized
  • Mentoring, training, and developing junior colleagues while working in a matrix team environment
  • Handling multiple responsibilities at once to support fast paced project timelines
  • Maintaining accurate records of experiments and results in an electronic laboratory notebook and authoring reports as assigned
  • Executing raw data and documentation review to support multiple projects in parallel with focus on compliance and efficiency, as well as setting a strong example for others
  • Understanding of key analytical deliverables including method development, validation, stability, release testing and analytical strategies to bring these individual items together collectively for a fast-paced program
  • Authoring methods, protocols and reports as assigned
  • Helping to develop and troubleshoot HPLC methods
  • Independently designing and performing elaborate, technically challenging experiments in a resourceful manner with a high degree of reliability and attention to details
  • Demonstrating knowledge of scientific principles and understanding of applicable drug development regulations
  • Helping to maintain and troubleshoot as applicable general lab equipment, HPLCs and dissolution systems
  • Participating in the preparation of presentations and may present experimental conclusions at internal team meetings
  • Performing other duties as assigned

 

 

 

 

Required Qualifications:

 

  • A Ph.D. degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or Pharmaceutical Chemistry and 4-7 years experience, or Master’s and 7+ years experience, or Bachelor’s and 10+ years experience
  • Attention to detail and ability to track key information
  • A thorough understanding of dissolution and HPLC method development
  • Knowledge of various dissolution systems and apparatus types
  • Excellent attention to detail and strong communication and documentation skills
  • The ability to work successfully in both a team/matrix environment as well as independently
  • The ability to work in a fast pace environment, manage priorities, and communicate outcomes
  • Leadership experience, but not necessarily management experience, is required

 

 

 

 

 

Pay Range

$65-$75/HR
